No need of multiple FIRs against same person: Mumbai police refuse to file FIR against Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair

When complainant said that there are complaints registered against Zubair in other parts India too, police countered him by saying if complaints are already being registered across India, what is the need to file another FIR in Mumbai.

Mumbai, June 17: Mumbai police refused to file an FIR against Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair for his insulting social media posts against Hindu deities.

When complainant, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha media cell member Deep Ved, said that there are complaints registered against Zubair in other parts India too, police countered him by saying if complaints are already being registered across India, what is the need to file another FIR in Mumbai.

Ved is a youth living in the Borivali area of Mumbai who works with Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. He went to the Borivali police station on June 15, with a 19-page complaint that included 17 pages of evidence prints of Zubair’s social media posts (including Zubair’s derogatory posts referring to Hindu deities as he dog-whistled Islamists to attack former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma).

According to reports, Ved said that when he insisted to file the FIR, he met Inspector Namdev Jadhav, explained to him the whole case. Even Inspector Jadhav told him that no FIR can be filed against this. People in other parts of the country are filing cases against him for the things he has done. In response, Inspector Namdev Jadhav asked Ved that why do you want to file an FIR here when there are cases being filed against him in the whole country?

Moreover, Mohammed Zubair deactivated his Facebook account after some old posts invited backlash. Zubair’s Facebook account began showing the “deactivated” message on 13 June, the same day a Twitter user posted a screenshot of those posts, along with others, on Twitter.

The posts were about last year’s meeting between PM Modi and the Pope. Retweeting a news report about the meeting, Zubair posted a photo, said to have been posted by another Twitter user, that seeks to compare Vatican City to a Shivling. Zubair wrote that the “poster inspired me to come up with a parody Facebook page”.
