In a major development, actor Randeep Hooda performed the last rites of Dalbir Kaur, sister of Indian man Sarabjit Singh who was convicted of spying and terrorism in Pakistan. Hooda had portrayed Dalbir's late brother in the biopic 'Sarbjit', which starred Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Dalbir, who fought for her wrongly-accused brother until the very end.
Sarabjit Singh was accused of being an Indian spy in Pakistan and was sentenced to death by a Pakistani court.
During the shoot of the film, Randeep and Dalbir formed a close bond and it was then that the latter had requested the actor to give her 'kandha' when she dies, as she saw her brother in him.
Staying true to his promise, Randeep took off to Punjab as soon as he heard the news of Dalbir Kaur's demise. The actor reached her village Bhikhiwind near Amritsar and paid his last respects to Dalbir, while also lighting her pyre as a brother would do during the last rites.
The film 'Sarbjit' was helmed by Omung Kumar and also starred Richa Chadha and Darshan Kumar in key roles. The film was released three years after Sarabjit Singh died in a Lahore jail after being attacked by his fellow inmates.
