Mumbai, June 30: Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has announced his resignation, only minutes after the Supreme Court refused to stay the governor-ordered floor test in assembly scheduled for tomorrow.

"I am resigning as the chief minister," Thackeray said, adding that he is also quitting his membership of the legislative council.

"I had come (to power) in an unexpected manner and I am going out in a similar fashion. I am not going away forever, I will be here, and I will once again sit in Shiv Sena Bhawan. I will gather all my people," he further said.

Just hours before announcing his resignation, Thackeray chaired his final cabinet meeting as the CM, where the nod was given to rename Aurangabad as Sambhaji Nagar and Osmanabad as Dharashiv - both were long-pending demands of the Shiv Sena.

“I want to express my gratitude to the people of NCP and Congress that they supported me. From Shiv Sena, Anil Parab, Subhash Desai and Aaditya Thackeray, these people were only present when the proposal was passed while NCP and Congress people also supported the proposal,” Uddhav Thackeray

“Bad luck has struck our government,” Thackeray said announcing his resignation from the top post. Thackeray also expressed his disappointment with the Shinde faction, saying that he gave the rebel MLAs all that they wanted.

"We have lost a sensitive and cultured Chief Minister. History tells us that fraudsters do not meet a happy end," said Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut said in a tweet.

Shortly after Thackeray resigned, Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrakant Patil said party colleague Devendra Fadnavis and rebel Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde will take a call on the next court of action.

The state BJP unit has asked all its MLAs to gather in Mumbai. Patil has also asked the rebel Shiv Sena MLAs not to come to Mumbai today, and arrive only on the day of oath-taking.
