Gujarat hooch tragedy: Death toll reaches 19, dozens hospitalised in critical condition

Bhavnagar, July 26: The death toll in the hooch tragedy in Ahmedabad and Botad vilages in Gujarat reached 18, due to consumption of spurious liquor. Dozens more were hospitalised.

In Gujarat, manufacturing, sale and consumption of liquor is banned by the state govt. Almost 2 dozen have been hospitalised after their condition deteriorated following consumption of hooch, according to reports.

Some of the critical patients were shifted to the government hospital in Botad, Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar. 6 have been shifted to Ahmedabad for further treatment, said Dr Sanket, Medical Officer Dhandhuka.

Reports say that police have detained some people who were allegedly involved in selling hooch in villages. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has also been formed by Gujarat govt to probe the incident. The SIT will be headed by a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) level officer.

Senior police officials said that the death toll may go up as the condition of some patients in Bhavnagar and Botad is critical. Ashok Kumar Yadav, Inspector General of Bhavnagar Range, rushed to Botad following the incident.

Meanwhile, police have arrested a man named Pintu, who was allegedly involved in selling illicit liquor. Gujarat DGP, Ashish Bhatia, claimed that police have detained 3 liquor smugglers from Botad district.

Earlier, the wife of a victim said that her husband's condition deteriorated hours after consuming alcohol in Rojid village on Sunday.
