Gujarat hooch tragedy: Death toll reaches 33, over 50 hospitalised

Ahmedabad, July 27: At least 33 people have died and more than 50 people have been hospitalised after consuming spurious liquor in the Botad district of Gujarat. The incident came forth after people from Rojid village were admitted to the government hospital when they fell ill.

The patients developed several kinds of health issues and lost their life after allegedly consuming spurious liquor.
 
 
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel chaired a meeting on the same in the evening, directed the state police to take strict action against illegal sellers of narcotic substances. Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal visited the hospital where hooch tragedy patients are admitted.

Earlier, state government formed a SIT to investigate the cause of the tragedy. Around 33 people died and 65 others have been admitted to different hospitals after consuming spurious liquor in the Rojid village of Gujarat where liquor is prohibited by the State.

The liquor was produced from very dangerous methyl alcohol, according to Gujarat Director General of Police Ashish Bhatia.

DGP Ashish Bhatia also said that majority of the casualties were from Botad district and six of them from neighbouring Ahmedabad district.

Senior police officials said that the death toll may go up as condition of some patients in Bhavnagar and Botad is critical. Ashok Kumar Yadav, Inspector General of Bhavnagar Range, rushed to Botad following the incident. According to officials, a medical team from the Bhavnagar district hospital has also been dispatched to Botad hospital.
