Navy announces 20 per cent of first batch of its Agniveers will be women

The Indian Navy through an official statement has now stated that for the navy twenty per cent the first batch of Agniveers will be composed of women.

New Delhi, Jul 5: Twenty per cent of the first batch of Agniveers that is to be recruited through the Agnipath scheme in the Indian Navy will comprise women candidates. Navy officials said, "20 pc of candidates will be women to form the first batch of Agniveers for the Agnipath recruitment scheme. They would be sent to different parts and branches of the Navy."

On Jul 1, the Indian Army and Navy resumed the recruitment process under the Agnipath scheme. The Indian Air Force being the first among the three forces, had resumed the same on Jun 24. However, there were certain aspects about the Agnipath scheme that had remained unclear, leading to doubts among the people that were further catalyzed by political elements into violent protests.
 
 
 
 
 
One of such aspects was exact ratio of participation of women granted by either of the forces. The Indian Navy through an official statement has now stated that for the navy twenty per cent the first batch of Agniveers will be composed of women.
 
Under the Agnipath scheme, youths from 17.5 years to 21 years will be inducted into the armed forces for a four-year tenure, while 25 per cent of them will be subsequently inducted for regular service. Later, on the recommendation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the govt increased the upper age limit for recruitment to 23 years from 21.
