Rani Abbakka Chowta, popularly known as the Abhay Rani for her bravery, was one of India's few female navy admirals who gave the Portuguese a bloody nose in the sea.
The Queen of Ullal fought the Portuguese back in 1525 when their colonial power was flexing its muscles in south India. Between 1525 and 1570, the Portuguese made several attempts to capture her capital, Ullal, but Rani repulsed each of their attacks for over four decades.
In the very last attack, the Portuguese managed to imprison Rani Abbakka, but she raised a revolt inside prison and died fighting.
