Chola period Parvati idol stolen from Tamil Nadu traced to New York auction after 50 years

New Delhi, Aug 9: Chola period idol of Goddess Parvati that had been missing since last 50 years was recently traced to New York. The idol had gone missing from the Nadanapureshwarar Sivan Temple at Thandanthottam, Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu. The information was provided by Tamil Nadu Idol Wing CID on Monday (Aug 8).

According to the details provided by CID, the idol was found at the Bonhams Auction House, in New York. A complaint regarding the theft of the concerned idol was taken to the local police in 1971. However, an FIR was registered about the same by the idol wing on a complaint from an individual K Vasu in Feb 2019. The case has been pending ever since.
 
 
 
 
 
The complaint received attention recently after the Idol Wing, after Inspector M Chitra took up the investigation and started looking for Parvati idols of the Chola period in various museums and auction houses abroad. With a rigorous search, the Idol Wing headed by inspector Chitra traced and identified the idol at the Bonhams Auction house.
