Chennai, Sept 7: Mani Ratnam, one of the greatest directors of Indian films, has released the trailer of his Ponniyin Selvan. On Tuesday, he and his team organized an audio event in Chennai where they launched the trailer of this period drama. The trailer showed the Chola dynasty and other film characters.

The star-studded cast consists of Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha, Sobhita Dhulipala, and Aishwarya Lekshmi among others. The trailer introduces the lead actors to their characters Vikram as Aditya, Jayam Ravi as Arunmozhi Varman, Trisha as Kundavai, and Aishwarya Rai as Nandini. It was earlier revealed that Aishwarya plays double role in the movie.

In 1955, Kalki Krishnamurthy wrote a novel called Ponniyin Selvan, on which Mani Ratnam's film is based upon. Though Mani Ratnam initially decided to make it a stand-alone film, he later divided it into two parts.
 
The movie is slated to be released in five languages on September 30. The period drama is produced by the Allirajah Subaskaran under the Madras Talkies Arunmozhi Varman, and Lyca Productions banners, respectively. Kamal Haasan is the narrator for the trailer. The two-part franchise has reportedly been shot on a budget of Rs 500 crore.
