In a rare update, Indian Army plans to promote 108 Lady Officers to the rank of Colonel

New Delhi, Jan 9: In a recent update regarding the lady officers of the Indian Army , the organization has decided to promote 108 of them to the rank of Colonels. Reports suggest that the process for their promotions is planned to begin today (Jan 9) onwards.

The instance happens to be a maiden one for lady officers to be selected for command roles in the Indian Army in varied branches including Engineers, Military Intelligence, Army Air Defence (AAD), Ordnance and other services on such huge numbers. It is noteworthy, that this is happening few days after another lady officer, Capt. Shiva Chauhan, was deployed at the Siachen Glacier.

According to the army officials, women are serving proudly and confidently in various operational theatres of the Indian Army. The officers are being given opportunities at par with their male counterparts. The officials informed that, "The process for selection of Women officers to tenant command assignments in Colonel rank is in progress.”

The rank of 'Colonel' stands 4th from the beginning in the hierarchy of Commissioned official ranking, after Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Lieutenant Colonel. The insignia of a Colonel represents two stars and the Royal Emblem. The role of a Colonel in the Indian army is thus, senior to everyone on the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and junior to the rank of Brigadier and every rank above.
