What is the viral deepfake video?

A clip that appears to show Rashmika Mandanna entering an elevator has been circulated widely recently and has shocked the Internet after it was revealed that the woman in the video is actually British-Indian influencer Zara Patel. Patel's face has been morphed into Rashmika Mandanna's using deepfake technology. Patel, who has a massive following on social media, had shared the video on October 9. The video has been edited in such a way that it's difficult to make out that it's “fake”.

Rashmika Mandanna has slammed the viral deepfake video describing it as "extremely scary."

In a post on X, the Animal star wrote: "I feel really hurt to share this and have to talk about the deepfake video of me being spread online. Something like this is honestly, extremely scary not only for me, but also for each one of us who today is vulnerable to so much harm because of how technology is being misused. Today, as a woman and as an actor, I am thankful for my family, friends and well wishers who are my protection and support system. But if this happened to me when I was in school or college, I genuinely can't imagine how could I ever tackle this. We need to address this as a community and with urgency before more of us are affected by such identity theft."

As the video turned viral, netizens questioned what this could mean for all kinds of news items since it's so easy to morph images and question the authenticity of any information on the net.

Veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan reposted the video and said, "Yes this is a strong case for legal."

Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar has also reacted to the actress' video and expressed his concern. He stated that these dangerous and damaging forms of misinformation need to be dealt with by platforms.

Celebrities like Mrunal Thakur, Manjima Mohan and singer Chinmayi Sripada have strongly reacted to deepfake video.

On the work front, Rashmika will next be seen in 'Animal' with Ranbir Kapoor. Helmed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, it also stars Anil Kapoor and Bobby Deol in the lead roles and is all set to hit the theatres on December 1.
