NB Explains | Attack on cricketer Prithvi Shaw for denying selfie: Who is "arrested" Sapna Gill & what led to the fight?

Cricketer Prithvi Shaw has landed himself in a controversy after he was allegedly manhandled and his car attacked with a baseball bat outside a luxury hotel at Santacruz in Mumbai. This came after an argument took place between a woman social media influencer and her male friend as the cricketer refused to click selfies with her. Soon after this, Sapna Gill was arrested on Thursday evening.

 

 

According to the police, it all started when Shaw (23) and two friends objected to Gill and his friend, Shobhit Thakur, repeatedly taking selfies with the player in the hotel at dawn on Wednesday. Following Shaw’s objection, Thakur and Gill alias Sanna, waited for 25 minutes outside the hotel for the cricketer and his friends to step out.

 

The police said when they came out, Thakur and Gill damaged Shaw’s BMW with a baseball bat, shattering the glass windshield and rear screen of the car. They said Thakur went on to call six friends and with them he and Gill chased Shaw’s car for 10km thinking the cricketer was in it. Shaw had left in another car after matters heated up.

 

 

Oshiwara Police eventually arrested eight people, including Sapna Gill.

 

 

Sapna Gill, a social media influencer and YouTuber from Bengaluru, has more than 2.18 lakh Instagram followers. Moreover, she acted in the 2017 movie Kaashi Amarnath and the 2021 Bhojpuri movie Mera Watan. A group of supporters on Instagram are harassing Gill after she accused Shaw of assault.

 

Sapna Gill’s lawyer Ali Kashif said, “Sapna was assaulted by Prithvi. A stick was seen in Prithvi’s hand. Prithvi’s friends assaulted the group first. Sapna is currently at Oshiwara police station. The police are not allowing her to go for medical.”
