Last week, Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal said she has been a victim of sexual assault at the hand of her father when she was a child. Taking part in an award function organised by the women's commission, Swati Maliwal said the event made her emotional as the struggle stories of the women awardees reminded her of her own struggle -- how she was 'sexually assaulted' by her father.
Swati Maliwal 2016 Tweet Viral on Father

"My father used to beat me up a lot. I used to hide under the bed when he came home, I was so scared. At that time, I used to think the whole night about how to empower women against such atrocities. He used to hold my hair and hit my head hard against the wall. But I believe that ignited the determination in me to work for the welfare of the women," Swati Maliwal said adding that she stayed with her father till class four.

With the help of AAP, Swati Maliwal became the chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women in 2015 after the party formed the government. Her tenure was extended later. Before leading DCW, she worked as the advisor of CM Arvind Kejriwal. Swati Maliwal was married to Naveen Jaihind, former Haryana AAP chief. They got divorced in 2020.

However, now, an old post by Swati Maliwal, about her father is going viral. Netizens have been criticizing Maliwal over her claims of being sexually abused in childhood by her father.

In the 2016 tweet, Maliwal had written, "I am the daughter of an army man. I was brought up in the Army. I have been taught to work for the country, to sacrifice my life for the country. I am not afraid of anything."

BJP leader Priti Gandhi, too, shared Maliwal’s old tweet and wrote: "In 2016, Swati Maliwal was a proud daughter of an army man... and in 2023, her father was a sexual assaulter. Will the real Swati Maliwal please stand up?!?!"

Former DCW chief, Barkha Shukla, also called out Maliwal and said she had lost her mental balance. Speaking to ANI, she said, “I think Swati Maliwal has lost her mental balance. That's why she talks like this. First, she made many serious allegations about her husband, after which she is now accusing her dead father. It is absolutely wrong and extremely shameful.”

"In 2016, Maliwal said that her father is a soldier and that she is proud of him. Maliwal is talking about the same father, who is not alive, and is accusing him of physically assaulting her. I request the Lieutenant Governor to immediately dismiss her from her post since her remarks will create trouble in society. This is a wrong message and it will affect the women and daughters of Delhi. This is a wrong notion about the relationship between a father and a daughter," she said.
