The Ministry of Defence (MoD) of India has authorized the purchase of 12 Su-30MKI fighter planes for the Indian Air Force (IAF), signaling a substantial restart of Russian military system procurement. This move comes as the difficulties associated with transferring remittances to Russia as a result of US sanctions have lessened.

The INR 11,000 crore ($1.33 billion) sale is the largest for Russian-origin weapons for India's armed services since the start of recent geopolitical events. The 12 fighters will be purchased from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), an Indian state firm that licenses the Su-30MKI for manufacture in India.

The Indo-Russian deal requires Russia to supply numerous raw materials and components for the Su-30MKI, including as titanium blocks, forgings, and fasteners.

These parts will be shipped to HAL in the form of a kit. HAL had already assimilated Russian-supplied Su-30MKI technology, assuring indigenous production capability.

The Su-30MKI fighters will have Indian-made avionics and communication systems, as well as armament systems manufactured in India. Furthermore, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has given Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for HAL's Su-30MKI modernization, however, the entire extent of modernization has yet to be established.

The IAF has considered a significant performance upgrade for the Su-30MKI in order to bring it up to speed with the Su-35S. Russia has successfully updated its Su-30SM fighters with new avionics, resulting in performance equivalent to the Su-35S.

The restart of Su-30MKI procurement is a significant step forward in India's military acquisitions, demonstrating the country's continued attempts to improve its air force capabilities.
