The Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) of Salipur called prominent BJD leader and Mahanga MLA Pratap Jena to appear in court on October 6 to record his statement in the 2021 Mahanga double murder case.

On Monday, the Salipur JMFC court decided that the prosecution proceed since a chargeable case had been established against the BJD MLA in the double murder case.

The court determined that Jena has established a prima facie case punishable under Sections 302, 506, and 120 (B) of the IPC.

Notably, on January 2, 2021, BJP leader and former Mahanga block chairman Kulamani Baral and his colleague Dibyasingha Baral were brutally killed at Jankoti village in the Mahanga region of Cuttack district.

Prafulla Biswal, the main culprit in the case, was later discovered dead under strange circumstances in the Tangi region of Cuttack district.

On the basis of a FIR filed by Kulamani's son Ranjit Kumar Baral, the police charged Jena and 12 others in the double murder case.

Jena's name, however, was later removed from the charging sheet.

Hearing a plea submitted by Kulamani's son, the Salipur JMFC court had asked the then-IIC of Mahanga police station to investigate claims of the legislator's participation in the murder case.

So far, the police have detained ten people in connection with the double-murder case.
