In a latest big scoop from Maharashtra politics ahead of the 2024 loksabha elections, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar is likely to nominate his wife, Sunetra Pawar, against her sister-in-law and NCP MP Supriya Sule from Baramati constituency.
Campaign on to promote Sunetra
The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) faction led by Ajit Pawar has commenced a campaign to promote Sunetra Pawar's work in Baramati, with a promotional vehicle adorned with her image roaming the area. Flex banners have been mounted on the vehicle, featuring prominent photographs of both Sunetra and Ajit Pawar.
Sunetra Pawar met with BJP MLA Rahul Kul, who is contesting from the Daund Assembly constituency. This meeting, which lasted for about three hours, has sparked discussions about the electoral calculations for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
A few days ago, Ajit Pawar's close associate, Veerdhaval Jagdale, demanded Sunetra Pawar's candidacy from the Baramati Lok Sabha constituency. He had written letters to the state president Sunil Tatkare and Praful Patel.
The Baramati Parliamentary constituency has long been considered a stronghold of Sharad Pawar. However, a split in the NCP has altered the political landscape. 2024 may change the dynamics in this bustling town known for its agriculture, cooperatives, industries and the social sector.
After the split within the Nationalist Congress Party, there has been significant discussion surrounding Sunetra Pawar's candidacy for the Baramati Lok Sabha seat.In the 2019 polls, Supriya Sule trounced BJP candidate Kanchan Kul - the wife of MLA Rahul Kul - by a margin of 1,57,000 votes.
Tussle between sisters-in-law
If Supriya Sule’s sister-in-law, Sunetra Pawar, enters the electoral arena, it could significantly alter the political landscape in Pune's Baramati. Despite not holding an active political position, Sunetra Pawar’s strong influence and extensive connections within the Baramati constituency could pose a formidable challenge. Sunetra Pawar’s adept management of Ajit Pawar’s assembly campaign demonstrates her organisational skills and political acumen.
Moreover, her initiatives such as providing employment to 40,000 women through Baramati Textiles Park could bolster her credibility and garner support from various segments of the electorate. With Sunetra Pawar’s entry into the fray, the political dynamics in Baramati would likely intensify, as she would prove a strong contender against Supriya Sule.
Why Baramati Is Important?
For Ajit, winning Baramati is crucial for his faction of NCP. After rebelling from the party and joining ranks with the BJP-Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) government in the state, Ajit is planning to take full control over the party by striking hard in Baramati to stop Sharad Pawar’s politics as the town stands tall as a shining example of NCP founder’s multi-faceted development initiatives in rural parts.
For many elections in the past, the BJP tried its best to defeat the Pawars on their home turf with little success so far. It should be noted that, BJP sent finance minister Nirmala Sitaraman in the Baramati constituency last year for two days and asked her to visit each assembly segment to conduct various meetings to improve party’s chances. However, the changed political equations in the state is likely to prompt the BJP to leave Baramati for the Ajit Pawar camp.
