Adhik Mass, the extra month: Why the Hindu calendar has a ‘Spiritual Bonus’ this year?

During this period (May 17 to June 15), auspicious events or Mangalik Karyas, like weddings, housewarmings (Griha Pravesh), or sacred ceremonies, are not performed.

We are all familiar with the concept of a ‘Leap Year’ in the English calendar, where we add a day to February every four years. But our ancient Indian science goes a step further. Every three years, the Hindu calendar adds an entire extra month. This is known as Adhik Maas, Mal Maas, or more famously, Purushottam Maas.

Why does this happen?

It is basically a cosmic adjustment between the Sun and the Moon. The Sun takes about 365 days to complete a year, while the Moon takes about 354 days. This leaves an 11-day gap every single year. Over three years, these days add up to roughly one full month. To keep our seasons and festivals in sync with nature, this extra month is added. It is a brilliant way to balance science with spirituality.

The Jyeshtha Schedule: Mark Your Dates!

This year, the month of Jyeshtha is being doubled. Here is how the timeline looks:
•  Until May 16: Regular Jyeshtha (Krishna Paksha).
•  May 17 to June 15: This is the Adhik Maas (The Extra Month).
•  June 16 to June 29: Regular Jyeshtha continues (Shukla Paksha).

Why are ‘Mangalik Karyas’ paused?

During this period (May 17 to June 15), you will notice that auspicious events or Mangalik Karyas, like weddings, housewarmings (Griha Pravesh), or sacred ceremonies, are not performed.

The reason is purely scientific. Usually, every month, the Sun moves from one zodiac sign to another, which is called Sankranti. However, during Adhik Maas, the Sun stays in one sign and doesn't transit. Because there is no Surya Sankranti, the energy of the environment is considered ideal for meditation and prayer rather than starting new worldly ventures. It is a time to hit the "pause" button on outside celebrations and focus on our inner growth.

The Spiritual "10x" Reward

In the old stories, this month felt sad because it didn't have a planet to rule it. So, Lord Vishnu gave this month his own name, Purushottam. He promised that anyone who prays, meditates, or helps others during this time will get 10 times more benefits than usual!

Since our bodies are made of five elements (Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space), our busy lives often throw these elements out of balance. Adhik Maas gives us a dedicated time to balance these elements and clean our system from within. Adhik Maas is like a "Spiritual Recharge" for our system. It’s the perfect time to:

•  Meditation or Yoga.
•  Chant mantras or visit temples.
•  Donate to those in need.

The Bottom Line

Don't look at the period from May 17th to June 15th as a "blocked" month. Instead, think of it as a Spiritual Bonus. It is a month dedicated entirely to you, your peace, your growth, and your connection with the divine. Let’s use this extra time to recharge our energy and start the next three years with a fresh and vibrant soul!
