A Durga temple in Asansol, West Bengal, which had remained closed for several years due to local tensions, reopened for devotees on Tuesday, May 5, after the BJP’s sweeping victory in the state Assembly elections.

Operated by the Shri Shri Durgamata Charitable Trust, the temple had largely stayed shut year-round, with worship permitted only during major festivals such as Durga Puja and Lakshmi Puja. Its reopening followed the BJP’s win in all nine Assembly constituencies of Paschim Bardhaman district, where Asansol is located, triggering excitement among residents. The extended closure had been attributed to community tensions and administrative curbs, making the reopening a notable moment for locals. Soon after the gates were opened, large crowds of devotees and BJP supporters gathered to offer prayers and celebrate the occasion.
