A day after the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a landslide victory of 206 seats in West Bengal’s assembly elections, a group of supporters reportedly renamed Masjid Bari Road to Netaji Palli Road in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.

The videos of the incident went viral on social media, in which the citizens can be seen climbing over the arch-shaped gateway and hitting the name 'Masjid Bari Road' inscribed on it in metal. The crowd, as seen in the video, replaces it further with Netaji Palli Road written in Bengali. (Netaji Palli road replaces Masjid Bari Road)

While supporters described the move as a tribute to Subhas Chandra Bose and a symbol of change, TMC supporters condemned it as an act of 'unauthorized vandalism'. Notably, the name change happened in the presence of state police.

Netaji Palli is a name commonly given to localities, neighborhoods, or residential areas in India to honor Subhas Chandra Bose. The term “Palli” in Bengali typically means a settlement or locality, so “Netaji Palli” literally translates to “Netaji’s locality,” with “Netaji” being the popular title of Bose. (Netaji Palli road replaces Masjid Bari Road)

Such place names are especially common in West Bengal, Bose’s home state, where his legacy holds deep cultural and political significance. These areas are usually not centrally planned under a single administrative definition but emerge over time through local naming practices, often reflecting public sentiment, political influence, or community identity. (Netaji Palli road replaces Masjid Bari Road)

In many cases, the naming or renaming of a locality to “Netaji Palli” is intended to symbolize patriotism, regional pride, and respect for Bose’s contribution to India’s freedom struggle.

The result underscores voters’ aspirations for change, improved infrastructure, and better economic opportunities. With this win, the party is expected to prioritize welfare schemes, law and order, and investment-driven growth, aligning the state more closely with the Centre’s vision of a “New India” driven by progress and stability.
