In a positive initiative, the Haryana government on Friday has decided that the farmers of the state will get two hours additional electricity supply for sowing paddy due to delay in monsoon.
Bihar government has increased the limit of paddy to be procured from the ryots, who are land owing farmers from the existing 200 quintals to 250 quintals per farmer and for non ryots from the existing 75 quintals to 100 quintals.
Chhattisgarh decided to stand with its farmers as it will pay a bonus of Rs 300 per quintal in addition to the Minimum Support Price (MSP) to paddy farmers.
In a bid to free Punjab from pollution, the state government has taken a big step of manufacturing Bio CNG and Bio-ethanol from paddy straw. Notably, Punjab’s Power Minister Gurpreet Singh Kangar informed that currently 20 million ton paddy straw per year is produced in the State. “About 20 to 25 percent of this is being used and the rest is burnt in the fields. While 5-6 tonne biogas/bio CNG / bioethanol can be produced from the stubble being burned in the fields,” he added.
Paddy straw burning has emerged as a major environmental concern in several states including New Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh etc. Notably, as a part of the state’s concerted efforts to find sustainable solutions to paddy straw burning, the Punjab government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOC) for setting up of bio-gas and bio-CNG plants.
To control the pollution the National Green Tribunal has directed the Delhi government and the states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan to take strict measures to deal with this serious biennial threat. As these four states contribute to increasing environmental pollution levels by burning the crop residue.
Chhattisgarh government today called Special Assembly session to address the issue of paddy Bonus to farmers as early as possible. Chief Minister Dr. Raman Singh said that the authorities are keen on seeing the happy smiling faces of farmers before the Festival of Lights-Deepawali.
