The ED had arrested Shivakumar on September 3, 2019 in another money-laundering case and the Delhi High Court granted him bail in October that year. The agency had in May this year filed a charge sheet against him and others in this case which was registered after taking cognisance of a Income Tax department charge sheet filed against him.
Congress general secretary in-charge of Karnataka affairs Randeep Surjewala said the ED summons have been issued as the ruling dispensation is scared of the support that the yatra is receiving from the people. Shivakumar said the BJP is scared of the yatra and is trying to stall it by misusing the central agencies.
The senior congress leader earlier termed the action of the ED as harassment and questioned the timing of the summons when the Congress Bharat Jodo Yatra was on and when the State Assembly session was underway.
“The prosecution complaint has been filed under various sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) before a Delhi court,” ED officials said. The charge sheet has been filed in the Rouse Avenue Court of Delhi before Special Judge Vikas Dhull.
It should be noted, that Kharge is reportedly the third party leader who tested positive after attending the Padyatra.
