Mumbai, Oct11: In conjunction with the corruption investigation against former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh, the CBI conducted searches at his Nagpur residence.
Anil Deshmukh's troubles began on February 20 when former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh charged him with extortion. Singh said in a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray that the NCP leader had instructed dismissed cop Sachin Vaze to extort Rs.100 crore per month from 1,750 Mumbai pubs, restaurants, and other companies.
Anand Daga, Deshmukh's lawyer, and CBI sub-inspector Abhishek Tiwari were detained on September 2 for allegedly leaking the central agency's Preliminary Enquiry report. In the case of Singh's charges, the report determined that no cognizable offence was established against the ex-Maharashtra Home Minister. A Special CBI court denied their bail request and ordered them to be held in judicial custody till September 20.
In a significant development on Monday, the CBI conducted searches at the Nagpur residence of former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh in connection with the corruption investigation against him. According to insiders, the central agency is planning to call the NCP head very soon. The CBI had already called Maharashtra Chief Secretary Sitaram Kunte and state DGP Sanjay Pandey to record their testimonies in this investigation. This was one of the first times an investigation agency summoned the state's most senior police officer and administrator. According to reports, the top officers were asked to respond to several investigation-related questions.
On April 21, the CBI filed an FIR under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 120 B of the Indian Penal Code against the NCP leader and unknown individuals (IPC). According to the FIR, the previous Maharashtra Home Minister was aware that discharged Assistant Police Inspector Sachin Vaze had been entrusted with the majority of Mumbai's dramatic and critical cases. Furthermore, it accused him and others of using undue influence over official transfers and postings.
