NIA court convicts 3 Al Qaeda affiliated group members in 2016 Mysuru court blast case

New Delhi, October 09: In a major development, a National Investigation Agency convicted three people, who had pledged their allegiance to proscribed terrorist organisation al-Qaeda, for their involvement in the bomb blast in a Mysuru court in 2016,
The three, identified as Nainar Abbas Ali, M Samsun Karim Raja, and Dawood Sulaiman, are all residents of Tamil Nadu. They have been found guilty of planting bombs in a public toilet in the court premises at Chamarajapuram in Karnataka city on 1 August 2016.
However, an official said that the quantum of the sentence will be declared on October 11. The case was earlier registered against unknown people, but the NIA re-registered the case based on orders from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and took over the investigation.
The court blast was one among five serial explosions carried out by members of the Base Movement, an organisation that pledged allegiance to the al Qaeda, the official said. Back in 2016, they had carried out a blast at Chittor Court in Andhra Pradesh’s Nellore in April, at Kollam court in Kerala in May, another at a Nellore court in September 2016, and one at a Mallapuram court in Kerala in November that year.
Ali and Sulaiman had conceived the Base Movement in January 2015 after being inspired by al Qaeda’s ideology and its leader Osama Bin Laden.

They then recruited the other accused and plotted to threaten government departments, especially courts, holding them responsible for “atrocities and injustice meted out to a particular religious group”, the NIA official said. Later, they issued threats to prison officials and police of different states, and even the French Embassy in India.
