The local police informed that the incident took place on Sunday in the Raniwara area. According to the police, Manju and her grandmother Sukhi Devi were walking in scorching heat to meet her grandmother's sister in a village a little over fifteen kilometers away. After walking for about 6-7 kilometers, they felt exhausted and fell unconscious as they could not find any source of water around the place.

This incident came to light after a shepherd found an old lady and a girl child lying unconscious on the road and informed the village head, police immediately. Following the call, police rushed to the spot, provided drinking water to Sukhi Devi, and took them to the hospital.

Padmaram Rana, a local police station inspector said Sukhi and Anjali were taken to the Raniwada hospital where Anjali was declared dead due to dehydration and heart attack while Devi’s treatment is underway. “The duo did not carry any drinking water with them and also took the wrong decision of choosing a deserted desert shortcut route instead of the 22 kilometer-long one,” he said.

He said that the probe revealed that the duo walked for 7 kilometers in 5 hours due to difficult terrain and high temperature. Padma Ram further informed that the wells meant for agricultural activity were just 1 kilometer away from the place where the duo fainted.

The incident has raised lots of questions over chief minister Ashok Gehlot led the Rajasthan government. Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has also attacked the state government for its indifference towards the Centre's Jal Jeevan Mission over the five-year-old's death.

Moreover, National Commission for Women (NCW) has written to chief minister Ashok Gehlot and the chief secretary and slammed the govt. In the letter, NCW sought action against officials, who failed to discharge their duties and asked the government to take action to prevent such incidents in the future. It has also asked the government to provide medical help as well as compensation to the old woman and the minor’s family.
