Mumbai, September 28: A Thane court has issued a show-cause notice to self-proclaimed atheist and Bollywood lyricist Javed Akhtar for his alleged remarks comparing the Taliban with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
The court ordered the issuance of the notice returnable on November 12. This comes after the RSS worker Vivek Champanerkar filed a lawsuit in the court of the additional chief judicial magistrate and joint civil judge (senior division) against the controversial lyricist. In the petition, Champanerkar said the statements made by the defendant were aimed at belittling the RSS's image in the eyes of the common public. Champanekar sought Rs. 1 as compensation.
Advocate Aditya Mishra, who appeared for the complainant, argued at length in the court and claimed the defendant (Akhtar) had made "derogatory" remarks against the RSS while appearing in a show of a private news channel.
During his interview with the Private News Channel, Akhtar passed a controversial remark and said that there was an uncanny similarity among right-wing groups. He said, “The way the Taliban are trying to build a Muslim nation. In the same way, some people present the concept of Hindu Rashtra to us.” He further added, “These people have the same mentality. The Taliban are violent. Are wild. But the people who support RSS, Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal have the same mentality.”
He goes further and said that the ideologies that Hindu organisations follow are no different from the Taliban. “They have no love for minorities, like Taliban. They want women to be home, like the Taliban. What is the difference between the two? They say no law is superior to their religious faith, that is what the Taliban says. How are you different from them?” he said.
