Dispur, Mar 9: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is headed for a big win in the Assam municipal elections 2022. The BJP party has taken a lead in 75 out of the 80 municipal corporations in the state - which consists of 977 wards - while the opposition Congress and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) are ahead on one and two civic bodies each.

CM Sarma has expressed gratitude towards the people of Assam for this thumping win. "I bow my head in gratitude to the people of Assam for the thumping victory of candidates from @BJP4Assam & its allies in the municipal elections. The victory reflects the public trust on our alliance guided by the visionary leadership of Adarniya PM Shri @narendramodi ji," CM Sarma tweeted.
 
 
He has BJP karyakartas of the state. He said, "I congratulate all @BJP4Assam karyakartas & leaders who worked tirelessly spreading the development ideals of Adarniya PM Shri @narendramodi ji. This massive mandate for growth & development will inspire us to pursue our agenda of progress with renewed vigour."
 
 
JP Nadda, National President of BJP, said, "BJP's massive victory in the municipal elections of Assam shows that the public's confidence in PM Shri @narendramodi ji's "Act East" policy has been welcomed by the people of Assam. I congratulate and thank the people of Assam, CM Shri @himantabiswa, @BJP4Assam and its allies."
 
 
According to the Assam State Election Commission (SEC), the BJP and its allies are leading on 807 out of the 977 wards. The Congress and its allies, meanwhile, are leading in 71 wards while others are ahead on 99 wards. Out of 977 wards, 57 had already been declared uncontested and elections were held for 920 wards.
 
The polling for the Assam municipal elections were held on March 6. The SEC said a voter turnout of 70 per cent was registered, adding no untoward incident was reported. The poll body further said it has not received a request for re-poll from any part of the state.
