Meghalaya rain havoc: Mawsynram's record high rainfall; surpasses its own record

Mawsynram has recorded its all time high of 1003.6mm rainfall in the last 24 hours. The heavy rainfall that has lashed out in Meghalaya has also resulted in one of the worst floods and landslides in Meghalaya in recent years.

Shillong, Jun 18: World’s wettest place, Mawsynram in Meghalaya has surpassed its own record of 945.4mm of rain in 1966, with a whopping 1003.6mm rainfall in the last 24 hours. The recent record has been Mawsynram's highest ever since rainfall records have been recorded since 1940. For Cherrapunji rainfall records 972mm in the last 24 hours.

According to the recent records, Mawsynram has recorded its all time high of 1003.6mm rainfall in the last 24 hours, followed by Cherrapunji with 972mm during the same duration. Heavy rainfall has been wrecking the north eastern state of Meghalaya since past three days. Areas around Sohra, particularly, has been affected due to heavy rainfall. According to the reports of the Indian Express, the 24-hour rain recorded in Cherrapunji, for the past three days since Jun 15 were 811mm, 673.6mm and 972mm respectively. Among these, Jun 17 has been marked as the third wettest and Jun 15 as the eighth wettest day in June, in the last 122 years.
 
 
 
 
 
The heavy rainfall that has lashed out in Meghalaya has also resulted in one of the worst floods and landslides in Meghalaya in recent years. Until now, nearly ten lives have been taken due to heavy rain in Meghalaya and Assam. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) data, so far the rain recorded at Cherrapunji since Jun 1 is 4,067mm.
 
According to the IMD, strong and consistent inflow of moist southwesterly or southerly winds from the Bay of Bengal are reaching straight over to the northeast India since the last week. It has resulted in such havoc. Such winds along with local orographic and weather factors have resulted with such high rainfall over northeast India.
