New Delhi, Jun 6: The first batch of 377 Haj pilgrims was flagged off to Medina from Cochin International Airport on Saturday (Jun 4). The Kerala Minister of Wakf and Haj Pilgrimage V. Abdurahiman flagged off the Saudi Arabian Airlines flight carrying pilgrims.
The flight was flagged off in the presence of Minister of Ports Ahamed Devarkovil, Central Haj Committee Chairman A. P. Abdullakutty and others. In all, twenty flights will be flying 7224 pilgrims from the Cochin International Airport for the Haj pilgrimage till the 16th of June. Of these, 5,758 pilgrims are from Kerala and the remaining from Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
According to Zee News, the last aircraft will take off from Mumbai on July 3. In April, Saudi Arabia announced its plan to receive 1 million domestic and foreign pilgrims during the upcoming Haj season, marking the first time that foreign pilgrims will be allowed to perform the annual pilgrimage after the previous two seasons, which were restricted to domestic pilgrims due to Covid-19 outbreaks.
