Chennai, July 11: Soon as the Madras Court allowed All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) to hold the general council meeting today, supporters of E Palaniswami and O Pannerselvam clashed on the streets of Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
The supporters of EPS and OPS were seen burning posters and banners outside the AIADMK headquarters. The supporters of O Paneerselvam broke open the door of the AIADMK office ahead of the meeting.
A single bench of Justice Krishnan Ramaswamy rejected a plea by OPS and allowed the general council meeting, which proposes to revive the interim general secretary post and abolish coordinator as well as joint coordinator posts to be held. A total of 16 resolutions are expected to be passed in the AIADMK General Council meeting led by E Palaniswami.
Notably, the power struggle between O Panneerselvam and Edappadi K Palaniswami within the party has been going on for quite some time with Palaniswami having the odds in his favor to become the chief of Tamil Nadu's main opposition party.
In the last meeting held on June 23, Panneerselvam was sidelined and walked out along with his supporters. The Panneerselvam faction had filed a plea to the Madras HC to stall the meeting but the HC rejected the same and gave a go-ahead to the meeting.
It is important to note here that the Palaniswami side has claimed that their leader has the support of 2,455 general council members, while the OPS faction claimed that Panneerselvam has the support of 1.5 crore party workers. The AIADMK has 2650 GC members.
