Dumka, Sept 6: NCPCR chief Priyank Kanoongo, who is in Jharkhand with his team to probe two minor girls’ deaths in Dumka, claimed that the state government was "trying to obstruct investigation". Kanoongo said that he had informed the government about the visit, but necessary arrangements have not been made to aid the inquiry.
“I have come to Dumka to probe two cases. The Jharkhand government was told about the visit much in advance. A team of NCPRC wanted to meet the family of the girl who was hanged after rape. The collector had give consent… After coming to the village, however, her parents could not be found,” the chairperson of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) tweeted.
Neighbours told the NCPCR team that someone whisked them away in car, Kanoongo stated. “The government is very uncooperative… It is obstructing the investigation,” he wrote.
"We were not allowed to meet parents of the child. Parents not given compensation & not allowed to meet investigative agencies. There's doubt over the administration's role," said Priyank Kanoongo, NCPCR Chairperson.
A 14-year-old tribal girl was raped and hanged from a tree by Arman Ansari. The girl was sexually exploited by a man on the pretext of marriage and was raped, killed, and hanged from the tree in Dumka. Babulal Marandi, former Chief Minister of the state and leader of the opposition in the current assembly, shared this news from his Twitter handle. The accused Arman Ansari has been arrested in this case.
In an insensitive manner, Jharkhand CM Heman Soren while reacting to the death of a minor girl who was found hanging from a tree in Dumka district said, "Incidents happen. Where do they not occur?". Notably, Dumka is a long-held stronghold of Hemant Soren and his family. It is pertinent to mention this came days after another minor girl was set ablaze in Dumka by one Shahrukh on August 23. The girl had succumbed to her injuries on August 28.
