The Lok Sabha elections of 2024 have had their dates announced, with the BJP having already released two candidate lists. Now, there is ongoing discussion regarding the release of the third list on social media. Amid discussions surrounding various parliamentary seats, one of the significant seats being discussed is the Rae Bareli Parliamentary Seat, traditionally recognized as the stronghold of the Gandhi family. Speaking about the same, there have been reports of BJP fielding the former national spokesperson Nupur Sharma from the Raebareli parliamentary constituency.

This came after several reports quoting sources have claimed that Nupur Sharma, who was dragged into controversy deliberately over her remarks on Prophet Mohammed, will be contesting in the Lok Sabha elections from Raebareli seat, which has been the stronghold of the Gandhi family.  This significant development has garnered attention in social media, too. Earlier, Nupur Sharma was fielded against Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal for New Delhi constituency.

Raebareli and Congress

Traditionally, Rae Bareli and Amethi have been bastions of the Nehru-Gandhi family's political influence, underscoring their deep-rooted connection with the constituents in Uttar Pradesh. However, Sonia Gandhi, after four consecutive terms as the Raebareli MP, vacated the seat in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Before Sonia, former PM Indira Gandhi had won from Raebareli three times. Now, the rumours of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra contesting from the Raebareli seat are doing rounds.

Who is Nupur Sharma?

While a student, she had joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and won the presidency of the Delhi University Students Union in 2008, breaking an eight-year-long dry spell for the ABVP. As mentioned above, Nupur Sharma was fielded against Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal for New Delhi constituency. However, she was thrown under the bus by so-called fact checker Mohammad Zubair over her remarks on Prophet Mohammad prompting her suspension as BJP national spokesperson. This followed radical Islamists abusing and issuing death threats against her and her family. Several came in support of Nupur Sharma but were killed including Kanhaiya Kumar creating a huge controversy.
