New Delhi, October 10 : Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Nabin on Saturday accused opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal and the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), of attempting to destabilise. India with alleged support from foreign powers. His remarks came amid mass detentions of protesters in and around Delhi who planned to march to Jantar Mantar and demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
Nabin alleged that opposition groups were competing to create instability in the country instead of accepting their electoral defeats. He warned that the government would deal firmly with attempts to disturb peace and development.
“An attempt is being made to create a dangerous atmosphere in the country,” Nabin said, claiming that the opposition was trying to disrupt the peaceful progress of the country’s 140 crore citizens.
Addressing the opposition leaders, Nabin alleged that their political activities were being influenced by foreign powers and alliances.
“I want to say that you are attempting this for your political objectives as well as at the direction of foreign powers,” he said, adding that opposition leaders could not accept India’s progress despite the global crisis.
He further warned that the BJP and its supporters would respond to attempts to create unrest. “The Bharatiya Janata Party and the patriotic people of the country will give you a befitting response,” he said.
Nabin also accused opposition leaders of challenging the constitutional framework and using insulting language against people holding high constitutional offices. He claimed that such actions would not be accepted by the public.
The protests were planned to take place at Jantar Mantar, with participants seeking the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar. Several protesters, including CJP leaders, were detained in and around the national capital.
Remarks Amid Elon Musk’s Starlink Controversy
Nabin’s comments came amid US billionaire Elon Musk’s criticism of delays in the launch of his satellite communications company, Starlink, in India.
Musk had accused unnamed “oligarchs” of obstructing the company’s entry into the Indian market and targeted industrialist Mukesh Ambani in his remarks. Rahul Gandhi responded to Musk, saying, “Welcome to India, Elon. Wait till you discover the other guy.”
‘Foreign Hand’ Narrative in Indian Politics
The use of the “foreign hand” narrative has featured in Indian politics across different governments. Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi cited foreign interference while addressing political movements and unrest during the 1970s and 1980s. Rajiv Gandhi also referred to foreign influence during the Bofors controversy.
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh blamed foreign-funded non-governmental organisations (NGOs) for protests against a nuclear power plant, while Congress leaders questioned possible American support for Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption movement.
The Narendra Modi government has also accused foreign-linked groups of influencing protests, including the 2021 farmers’ agitation. Following international responses to the protests, including comments by Rihanna and Greta Thunberg, Modi referred to a “Foreign Destructive Ideology”.
Nabin’s latest remarks have brought the debate over alleged foreign interference and political protests back into focus, amid continuing tensions between the BJP and opposition parties.
