New Delhi Oct 12: The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Mahila Morcha launched protests against Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam on Monday, October 12, over sexual-harassment allegations involving women students at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). The protests intensified political pressure on the Congress leadership, with BJP demonstrators demanding the MP’s expulsion from the party and his resignation from the Lok Sabha.
The demonstrations, organised under the banner of the “Nari Shakti Hunkar Andolan,” were held in Delhi and other parts of the country. In the national capital, BJP Mahila Morcha activists marched towards the Congress headquarters at Indira Bhawan. Protests were also reported in Karnataka and Manipur.
The BJP demanded that Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi take action against Akoijam. The protesters questioned the Congress leadership’s response to the allegations and accused the party of failing to demonstrate accountability when a member of its own ranks faced serious accusations.
The BJP also called for an apology to the 11 women students reportedly associated with the complaints. Its leaders argued that the allegations required a serious response from the political leadership rather than silence or inaction.
Akoijam, a Congress Lok Sabha member from Inner Manipur and a former JNU professor, was dismissed from his teaching position by the university on October 9 following an internal inquiry into complaints by women students. Delhi Police registered a first information report (FIR) on October 12 on the basis of a complaint by the university administration.
The police investigation is underway. Akoijam has rejected the allegations and challenged the university’s action. The allegations have not, therefore, been established as criminal guilt, and the legal process remains distinct from the university’s disciplinary proceedings.
The controversy has triggered a political confrontation between the BJP and Congress, with the BJP using the issue to question the Congress leadership’s commitment to women’s safety and accountability. The Mahila Morcha’s demands centre on whether the party will take disciplinary action against its MP while the police investigation proceeds.
The protests have added to the pressure on Congress to clarify its position on the allegations and the action it considers appropriate against Akoijam.
