On May 13th, an unidentified miscreant wearing an Islamic skull cap in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district was caught after he vandalized a Durga temple, triggering tension and protests in the area.
According to local
reports and videos circulating on social media, idols and parts of the temple premises were found damaged, leading to outrage among local Hindu residents.
The CCTV footage of the said incident is making rounds on social media, in which the accused can be seen vandalizing the temple. As per the report by the
Hindu Post, the accused has been identified and arrested by the state police. But this fact could not be confirmed individually.
Murshidabad has witnessed several incidents of communal tension and violence in recent years, making the latest temple vandalism case politically sensitive in the state. This also comes days after BJP's Suvendu Adhikari took oath as the CM of the state, defeating TMC's Mamata Banerjee in the recently held state assembly elections.
The district had also earlier remained in the spotlight during protests and violence linked to the Waqf Amendment Act and other communal flashpoints.
In the given case, while authorities have not officially disclosed all details regarding the motive behind the vandalism, investigations are currently underway.
