The newly formed West Bengal government has
ordered the immediate shutdown of all illegal toll gates, unauthorized drop gates, and alleged roadside extortion points operating across the state. The directive was issued on Wednesday, May 13, by Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Agarwal under the leadership of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. (West Bengal illegal toll gates)
According to
reports, the state administration instructed district magistrates, police commissioners, and superintendents of police to identify and dismantle all toll collection points that were not officially approved by the competent authorities of the West Bengal government. It is important to understand that illegal toll booths and drop gates were being used in several districts earlier to forcibly collect money from truck drivers, transport operators, traders, and common commuters. The current government stated that from now onwards, only toll plazas legally authorized by the state or national authorities would be allowed to function. Any unauthorized collection of money in the name of tolls, road usage, vehicle entry, transport checking, or local syndicates has been declared illegal under the new order. Officials have reportedly been asked to take immediate enforcement action and submit compliance reports.
The issue of illegal toll collection has remained politically sensitive in West Bengal for years. BJP had repeatedly flagged local syndicates led by the TMC and other politically motivated groups for running extortion networks through temporary barricades and unofficial checkpoints on highways and rural roads. The crackdown is being seen as one of the first major administrative actions of the new BJP-led state government after the recent political transition in Bengal. The administration has maintained that the operation is aimed at restoring law and order, ensuring free movement of goods and vehicles, and ending illegal financial collections from the public.
