The newly constituted
West Bengal Legislative Assembly will now have its proceedings telecast live, with the state government
saying the move is aimed at ensuring transparency and allowing people to directly witness debates and discussions inside the House.
The announcement was made on Friday, May 15, during the first session of the 18th Assembly after
Suvendu Adhikari addressed the House following the unanimous election of BJP MLA Rathindra Bose as the new Speaker. The Chief Minister said the government wants citizens to know “what is happening inside the House” and assured that live telecast arrangements would be made for Assembly proceedings.
According to reports, the government also stressed the need for a “constructive opposition” and stated that opposition MLAs would get adequate opportunities to raise issues and interact with ministers.
The decision marks a significant shift in the functioning of the Bengal Assembly, as legislative proceedings in many states are either partially broadcast or made available through limited official feeds. The move is being projected as an effort to improve public access to legislative functioning and strengthen democratic accountability.
The
West Bengal Assembly has already begun sharing portions of proceedings online through official channels. Videos of the ongoing Assembly session were streamed on YouTube during the oath-taking and Speaker election proceedings.
The announcement comes days after the BJP formed its first-ever government in
West Bengal following the 2026 Assembly elections, with
Suvendu Adhikari taking oath as Chief Minister on May 10.
