According to Bar's family members, he was on his way home when a group of TMC workers cornered him near his residence and allegedly beat him up with sticks. They then disposed of his body in a sewer. A group of locals rushed him to Udaynarayanpur Hospital in Howrah, but he was declared dead on arrival.

Soon after receiving information, a team from the Udayanaranpur police station reached the spot and started an investigation. The development comes even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing BJP leaders on the party's victories in Assam and West Bengal, asked political parties to refrain from 'badla' (violence) and work for 'badlav' (change).

In a significant blow to the Trinamool Congress, the BJP won the West Bengal Assembly elections, winning 206 seats in the 294-member Assembly and ending Mamata Banerjee's 15-year rule. Mamata Banerjee dealt with a double blow on May 4 as she was defeated by her aide-turned-rival, BJP Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari in her home constituency, Bhabanipur, by a margin of over 15,000 votes.

Further, apart from Howrah Uttar, where BJP candidate Umesh Rai won the election and defeated TMC's Gautam Chowdhury, both Howrah Madhya and Howrah Dakshin have been won by TMC candidates. While Arup Roy won Howrah Madhya defeating BJP's Biplab Kumar Mandal by over 16,000 votes, Howrah Dakshin was won by TMC's Nandita Chowdhury, who defeated Shyamal Kumar Hati of the BJP by 7,828 votes.
