After the BJP's landslide victory in the state of West Bengal, a BJP worker, identified as Madhu Mandal, was beaten to death during a victory procession in the Rajarhat–New Town area. As per the initial
information, the victim was killed by a group of TMC workers for celebrating the BJP's win.
Sharp weapons were used to attack the deceased; however, the assault turned fatal. The incident has sent shockwaves across the states and the political circles, especially as it occurred within hours of the election results being finalized. (BJP worker killed by TMC worker)
BJP candidate Piyush Kanodia secured victory from the Rajarhat–New Town seat by a razor-thin margin of just 316 votes following a recount, marking a closely contested electoral battle. Within hours of being declared the winner and taking charge as MLA, Kanodia was seen attending the last rites of the slain party worker. (BJP worker killed by TMC worker)
“I have just taken charge as an MLA, and it hasn’t even been four hours, and I am having to place a garland on my brother’s body. I have told the police that those who are responsible for this act should not be spared at all," Kanodia said, expressing anguish over the incident.
In another similar incident reported on May 5, a BJP worker identified as Jadav Bar was
lynched to death by a group of people affiliated with the Trinamool Congress while he was on his way home in Udaynarayanpur in West Bengal's Howrah district. As reported earlier by Newsbharati, the BJP worker was celebrating the party's win with other party cadres as trends from the Election Commission suggested that the BJP was on its way to wrest power from the TMC. BJP secured a landslide victory in the state elections. In a significant blow to the Trinamool Congress, the BJP won the West Bengal Assembly elections, winning 206 seats in the 294-member Assembly and ending Mamata Banerjee's 15-year rule. Mamata Banerjee dealt with a double blow on May 4 as she was defeated by her aide-turned-rival, BJP Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari in her home constituency, Bhabanipur, by a margin of over 15,000 votes.
