On June 11, a woman in Uttar Pradesh's Bahraich district accused her father-in-law of repeatedly raping her at gunpoint. She also alleged that her husband later gave her triple talaq over phone.
Police said a case has been registered against five members of her in-laws family. No arrests have been made so far.
According to the complaint, the woman is a resident of Lucknow and got married in 2023. She alleged that her husband often stayed away from home for work. During this period, her father-in-law sexually assaulted her multiple times.
The woman claimed that her father-in-law threatened her with a country made pistol and warned her not to reveal the incidents to anyone. She claimed that the latest assault took place on January 24 this year.
She further alleged that when she raised an alarm and sought help, her mother-in-law, sister-in-law and brother-in-law assaulted her instead of supporting her.
The woman later returned to her parents house. After she left, her husband gave her divorce by pronouncing triple talaq over a phone call.
During the investigation, police recorded the husband's statement.
According to police, the husband claimed that his wife was involved in a relationship with another person and said the couple had been facing marital disputes.
Based on the woman's complaint, police have registered a case against the husband, father-in-law, mother-in-law, brother-in-law and sister-in-law under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act.
Rupaideha Station House Officer (SHO) Ramesh Kumar Rawat said the allegations and counter-allegations are being investigated.
Notably, instant triple talaq was declared illegal in India in 2019. Under the law, a Muslim husband who pronounces instant triple talaq can face imprisonment of up to three years along with a fine.
Police said further action will be taken after the investigation is completed.
