Security forces have arrested a Pakistani national near the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district during a joint anti-infiltration operation launched on the basis of specific intelligence inputs, officials said on June 13.

The operation, codenamed 'Operation Simri', was conducted by troops of the Indian Army's Chinar Corps in coordination with the Jammu and Kashmir Police after intelligence agencies alerted security forces about a possible infiltration attempt in the border area.

According to officials, the suspect had crossed into Indian territory under suspicious circumstances. Acting on the intelligence input, security personnel intensified surveillance and launched a search operation in the area.

The joint team successfully intercepted and arrested the individual near Simri village in Kupwara district on June 12, preventing what authorities described as a potential security threat from materialising.

Joint operation foils infiltration attempt

Security officials said the operation was launched as part of ongoing efforts to maintain a strong anti-infiltration grid along the LoC, which has witnessed repeated attempts by infiltrators and cross-border elements to enter Indian territory.

In a statement, the Chinar Corps said alert troops working closely with the Jammu and Kashmir Police detected and detained the intruder during the operation.

The prompt action by security forces ensured that the suspect was apprehended before he could move further into the hinterland, officials added.

The identity and background of the individual are currently being verified.

Intensive questioning underway

Following his apprehension, the Pakistani national was taken into custody and is being subjected to detailed interrogation by security and intelligence agencies.

Officials said investigators are attempting to ascertain the exact circumstances under which he crossed the LoC and whether he was acting independently or had assistance from handlers operating across the border.

Security agencies are also examining whether the individual has any links with terrorist organisations, overground worker networks, smuggling syndicates or other cross-border support structures.

Investigators are reportedly analysing his route of entry, communication history and any material recovered from his possession.

Authorities have not yet disclosed further details regarding his identity or the purpose behind his crossing into Indian territory.

Kupwara district, located in north Kashmir, shares a long and sensitive stretch of the Line of Control with Pakistan-occupied territory and has historically been one of the most active infiltration routes used by terrorists and cross-border operatives.

Security forces maintain a robust deployment in the region, supported by surveillance systems, intelligence networks and regular area domination exercises to detect and prevent infiltration attempts.

The latest apprehension once again highlights the continued challenges faced by security agencies in guarding the border against illegal crossings and potential security threats.

Officials noted that intelligence-based operations have significantly improved the ability of forces to detect suspicious movements near the LoC before infiltrators can penetrate deeper into populated areas.

Security intensified ahead of Amarnath Yatra

The apprehension comes at a time when security forces across Jammu and Kashmir are on heightened alert ahead of the annual Amarnath Yatra, one of the country's largest Hindu pilgrimages.

Lakhs of devotees are expected to undertake the pilgrimage this year, prompting authorities to strengthen security arrangements across transit routes, base camps and the pilgrimage tracks.

Given the heightened security environment, agencies are closely monitoring all infiltration attempts and suspicious movements along the border.

The latest incident is being viewed seriously by security establishments due to its timing ahead of the pilgrimage season.

Amit Shah reviews security preparedness

A day before the Pakistani national was apprehended, Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level security review meeting to assess preparedness for the Amarnath Yatra.

During the meeting, the Home Minister emphasised the government's commitment to ensuring the safety and smooth conduct of the pilgrimage.

He directed security agencies to establish an impregnable multi-layered security grid along the pilgrimage routes through coordinated efforts involving the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Indian Army and specialised counter-terror units.

Officials reviewed deployment plans, surveillance measures and emergency response mechanisms to address any potential security challenges during the Yatra.

Tourist destinations under security review

The high-level meeting also reviewed security arrangements beyond the immediate Amarnath pilgrimage routes.

Authorities assessed the security grid around major tourist destinations and vulnerable areas across Jammu and Kashmir to ensure comprehensive protection against possible threats.

Security agencies have increased surveillance at strategic locations, intensified intelligence gathering and enhanced coordination among various forces operating in the Union Territory.

Meanwhile, the apprehended Pakistani national remains under questioning as investigators work to determine the motive behind his crossing and any possible connections to cross-border networks.
