A dispute over irrigation water turned into a deadly mob attack in Bairagiwala village of Dehradun district on Saturday (June 13) evening, leaving a
BJP functionary dead and three of his family members seriously injured.
The victim, 44-year-old Vinod Kumar, was attacked after an argument with a villager identified as Imtiaz over watering an adjacent agricultural field. According to police, the altercation took place between 6 pm and 6.30 pm.
Police said that soon after the dispute, a group of more than 40 people armed with lathis, wooden planks, hammers and shovels allegedly gathered and stormed Vinod Kumar's house. The mob reportedly assaulted members of his family and attacked Vinod with a hammer.
Vinod sustained critical head injuries and died during treatment. His brothers Ashok and Rajesh, along with his sister-in-law Sushma, were seriously injured and rushed to hospital.
The incident sparked tension across the area, with angry residents and Hindu organisations staging protests and demanding immediate action against the accused.
Based on a complaint filed by Vinod's brother Ashok, Sahaspur Police registered an FIR under charges including murder, attempt to murder and rioting. The FIR names 12 accused, namely: Razzaq, Imtiaz, Aman, Yunus, Shahbaz, Sharafat Ali, Masoom, Adil, Shamoon, Salman, Javed and Intezar. Another 30 to 35 unidentified persons have also been booked.
Senior Superintendent of Police Pramendra Singh Dobal said police launched raids immediately after the incident and formed multiple teams to arrest those involved. Four accused Razzaq, Salman, Javed and Shahbaz, have been arrested so far, while efforts are continuing to nab the remaining suspects.
The killing triggered widespread protests in the village. Residents blocked roads and demanded strict punishment for those involved. Members of Hindu organisations also gathered in large numbers, raising slogans and seeking immediate action.
As tensions escalated, some protesters allegedly pelted stones at houses linked to the accused and vandalised property. Security forces, including the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), were deployed in the village to prevent further violence.
On June 14, authorities carried out bulldozer action against alleged illegal structures belonging to the accused. A shop, boundary wall and other structures linked to the main accused were demolished as a large crowd gathered at the site. Later, the administration reportedly razed the entire house of the principal accused.
Vikasnagar MLA Munna Singh Chauhan condemned the killing, describing Vinod Kumar as a dedicated BJP worker. He said those responsible for the brutal attack would not be spared and appealed to residents to maintain peace.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also condemned the incident and said any attempt to disturb the peace and social harmony of Uttarakhand would be dealt with firmly.
Heavy police deployment remains in place in Bairagiwala village. Officials said the situation is under control, though security forces continue to monitor the area closely while raids are underway to arrest the remaining accused.
