On Monday, June 1, Tahir Ali, a resident of Dhubri district of Assam, posted a morphed, derogatory image of Maa Durga, hurting the religious sentiments of the Hindu community. One of the social media users flagged the issue and asked the Assam Police to look into the matter.
In the morphed image posted by Ali, Maa Durga has been blatantly shown as clothless below the waist, while a couple of hands can be seen inappropriately touching the Hindu deity. The host user identified as @CountryGulshan on X also posted the image of Ali, provoking the netizens to comment on the issue.
"Goddess Durga is the symbol of power… those who tarnish her image fall into darkness themselves," one of the users said. "If the image is genuinely derogatory and intended to insult a religious deity, the matter should be investigated fairly, and action should be taken according to the law. Freedom of expression should not be used to deliberately hurt the religious sentiments of any community," another comment read.
"Strict action should be taken against such people who spread hatred in society. Such hateful people should be taught a good lesson," another comment further read.
Notably, Assam Police took cognizance of the event and asked the Dhubri police to look into the matter.
It is important to note that the Assam government takes strict action against those who attempt to spread religious enmity. The police punish those who deliberately target the Hindu religion and make derogatory comments against Hindu deities.
Last year in June, the Assam Police
registered a case against one Wajahat Khan who made offensive remarks against Devi Maa Kamakhya, one of the most revered deities in Hinduism. During the same time, Habiba Khatun from Silchar (Cachar district) in Assam was
arrested for making derogatory comments against the Hindu deities.
In the given case, the Assam Police has taken cognizance of the event and asked the concerned police to take action against the accused. Further updates in the case are awaited.
