On June 1, Rose Ali, also known as Ashif Khan, was killed in a police encounter in Mukalmua, Nalbari district,
Assam. Ali was the prime accused in the brutal killing of 19-year-old Madhurjya Barman and the serious assault of 18-year-old Mridumudra Deka. The two cousins were attacked while riding a scooty near Gangapur in Mukalmua after Deka had allegedly rejected Ali’s marriage proposal. Another youth, Ashik Ali, was also reportedly involved in the attack.
According to police, Ali was traced to a char (riverine) area in Mukalmua where he had been hiding. During the operation to apprehend him, he allegedly led officers to the location of the murder weapon. Nalbari Superintendent of Police Bibekananda Das stated that Ali attempted to snatch a service firearm from police personnel and flee. He reportedly fired around four rounds at the police team, prompting officers to retaliate in self-defence. Ali sustained gunshot injuries to the chest and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died due to severe blood loss.
SP Das described Ali as a highly dangerous criminal, stating that he had opened fire on the police after seizing a service weapon. The encounter occurred while officers were attempting to recover evidence related to the case. The attack on the cousins took place as they were returning home from Nalbari town after purchasing books. Police allege that Ali attacked them with a machete after Deka, a Class 12 student, rejected his marriage proposal. Deka, a resident of Gangapur, is currently undergoing treatment at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and remains in critical condition.
The Superintendent of GMCH said that Deka suffered multiple knife wounds, including injuries to her scalp, jaw, right hand, back, and scapular region. She is receiving intensive care and remains in a state of shock while undergoing further medical evaluation. Family members alleged that Ali had been harassing Deka and her family for an extended period, particularly after she declined his proposal. Her mother claimed that he had repeatedly threatened both her and her daughter and warned of serious consequences if Deka refused to enter into a relationship with him.
Madhurjya Barman, a resident of Balipathar in Chamata and a member of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), was rushed to Nalbari Medical College Hospital following the attack but succumbed to his injuries. His death sparked widespread protests across the region, with hundreds of people demanding justice. Several organisations, including the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bajrang Dal, and Hindu Suraksha Sena, organised demonstrations and road blockades on the Kumarikata road, calling for strict action against those responsible.
Nalbari MLA Jayanta Malla Baruah described the incident as deeply disturbing and expressed concern over what he termed the growing issue of “Love Jihad” in
Assam. He said the police administration was acting swiftly and expressed confidence in the Assam Police’s investigation. Baruah also met the victim’s family and assured them of full government support. He stated that police were conducting a thorough investigation and examining whether the accused had any accomplices in the crime.
