What was initially thought to be a tragic accident at Pune's historic Lohagad Fort is now emerging as a meticulously
plotted murder. Ketan Vishal Agarwal, 25, who died after plunging into a gorge at the fort, was allegedly pushed to his death by his own fiancée, Siya Goyal, and her secret lover, Chetan Chaudhary, both of whom have since been taken into custody.
Investigators have further revealed that Ketan's death on June 19 was not the first attempt on his life. Police believe it was, in fact, the second such bid, coming just five days after an earlier plan to kill him fell through. On both occasions, the conspirators allegedly
intended to disguise the killing as an accident.
Ketan had fallen approximately 350 feet into a gorge at Lohagad Fort during an outing with his fiancée and a group of friends. The trip had been organised to mark Siya's birthday, with the couple's wedding scheduled for the following month.
According to the preliminary investigation, Siya, 20, was allegedly carrying on a relationship with Chetan Chaudhary, 22, and had no desire to go through with her family-arranged marriage to Ketan. Viewing him as a barrier to her relationship with Chetan, she allegedly conspired with her lover to have him killed.
The sequence of events, as pieced together by police, began on May 31, when Ketan and Siya visited Lohagad Fort together on a trek. It was during this visit, investigators claim, that Siya first conceived the idea of murdering Ketan at the fort. The first execution of this plan allegedly took place on June 14, when the two accused took Ketan back to Lohagad and attempted to frighten him into falling into the valley by staging a fake snake scare. The plan, however, came to nothing, as Ketan remained unsuspecting and the attempt failed.
Undeterred, Siya allegedly orchestrated yet another trek to Lohagad on June 19, her birthday. This time, Chetan was allegedly summoned to the spot and approached from behind, and Ketan was pushed off the fort to his death.
Police have concluded that the incident was a premeditated murder and not an accident. A family member of Ketan disclosed that the couple had been planning a trip to Bali ahead of their wedding, with all travel arrangements already in place. However, Siya allegedly sabotaged the trip mid-journey by claiming she had misplaced her passport. Police have since established that she had in fact deliberately torn up and discarded her passport in the washroom of a hotel where the group had stopped for breakfast, forcing the cancellation of the international trip.
The family also revealed that Ketan had gone to extraordinary lengths to make Siya feel special. He had planned a lavish birthday celebration for her at a luxury resort in Mahabaleshwar, booking around 40 rooms for the occasion, and had also arranged a pre-wedding photoshoot at Lohagad, the very location where he would later lose his life. The family expressed deep shock upon learning that his death was not the mishap it had first appeared to be.
The investigation took a decisive turn when police noticed that Siya appeared to be concealing information during questioning. A closer examination of her mobile phone records, social media activity, and other digital evidence gradually unravelled the alleged conspiracy.
On the day of his death, June 19, Ketan had organised the Lohagad outing specifically to celebrate Siya's birthday as a prelude to their upcoming wedding. Back in Jaipur, his family had been making grand preparations for the marriage, including booking a palace as the wedding venue and arranging for guests. When the incident first surfaced, police had assumed Ketan had lost his footing while clicking photographs near the edge of the gorge, and the case was registered as an accidental death. It was only after subsequent findings pointed to something more sinister that investigators reclassified it as a murder case.
