Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and Deputy Pradhan of Kankalitala Gram Panchayat, Mamon Sheikh, who had been absconding since the change of government in West Bengal, was
arrested by Santiniketan Police in Birbhum on Sunday, July 12. However, he was pelted with eggs and allegedly assaulted by a group of people while being produced before a court on Monday, July 13.
According to reports, people first threw eggs at the police vehicle carrying Mamon Sheikh. As he was being escorted into the court premises, several individuals hurled raw eggs at him, while some allegedly assaulted him physically. Police managed to bring the situation under control and safely escorted the accused into the courtroom.
The video of the said incident is making rounds on social media. TMC’s Mamon Sheikh, one of the main architects of the 2021 post-poll violence in Birbhum, gets mob treatment on his way to a court hearing. His name spelled terror. Families got ruined, house after house was destroyed, and women faced terrible abuse," one of the users said.
"Notorious criminal Mamon Sheikh of Birbhum got the most brutal thrashing in front of the police while being brought to Court," another user said.
It is important to note that Mamon Sheikh faces multiple criminal cases. The charges include severe offenses such as illegal land grabbing, physical assault, extortion, and his alleged role as a mastermind behind the 2021 post-poll violence in Birbhum. Victims and the National Commission for Women (NCW) also received severe complaints of gang rape and threats to rival political workers.
Reacting to the arrest, BJP leader Khokon Das alleged that Sheikh had been involved in several criminal activities and had terrorised residents. He said no offender would be spared and that the Sheikh should receive appropriate punishment. Police sources said Mamon Sheikh is facing multiple criminal cases, including allegations related to post-poll violence, illegal land grabbing, assault, and rape.
Birbhum Superintendent of Police Vidit Raj Bundesh said that Mamon Sheikh, along with Nurul Islam, the TMC block president of Suri-II, had been arrested on the basis of complaints registered against them. He added that the investigation into the cases is underway.

Several TMC leaders, including Kunal Ghosh, Soumitra Banerjee, etc have been greeted with egg treatment by the enraged public who expressed their anger against the former TMC government after the BJP took over the state.
On July 1, 2026, eggs were thrown at Tirthankar Ghosh, the son of former TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh, when Khardah Police arrested him in connection with various alleged offences. Slogans of "chor, chor" were raised when he was being taken from the police station to the Barrackpore Sub-Divisional Court.

targeted with an egg by a local youth outside West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's Kalighat residence in Kolkata. The incident occurred as he was speaking to the media, prompting Ghosh to condemn the breach of security and lodge a formal police complaint.

pelted with eggs and shoes by an angry crowd outside the Dinhata Sub-Divisional Court in Cooch Behar. The altercation occurred following his arrest in Kolkata in connection with a fraud and extortion case regarding irregularities in the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) scheme. Despite police deploying heavy security and equipping Guha with a helmet, demonstrators managed to target him as he was escorted into a prison van.
