Mumbai, September 14: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday announced a clear political and legislative target for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), saying governments of the BJP-led NDA in all 21 states will introduce the common civil law before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
Linking the UCC to the government's broader agenda of legal and social reform, Shah cited the abolition of triple talaq as an example of measures aimed at securing equal rights for Muslim women. He said the UCC would take forward the principle of equality by providing a common framework for personal laws.
The announcement gives the BJP-led governments across the states a specific timeframe for advancing one of the party's longstanding ideological and political commitments. The UCC proposes common rules in areas including marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption, replacing religion-based differences in personal laws with a uniform civil framework.
The Home Minister's announcement is also significant ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha election, as the BJP has consistently identified the UCC alongside other major issues of its political agenda.
The move is expected to trigger renewed political debate between the BJP and opposition parties over personal laws, religious practices, equality and the constitutional framework governing civil rights.
Shah also reiterated the government's positions on national security, illegal infiltration and terrorism during his interaction with reporters.
Shah, speaking to reporters in Mumbai while highlighting the achievements of the Narendra Modi government and the BJP, said the UCC had already been introduced in several states and expressed confidence that the remaining NDA-ruled states would follow suit before 2029.
