France Gets Its First Traditionally Designed Hindu Temple: BAPS Mandir Inaugurated Near Paris

New Delhi, September 8 : A new landmark of Hindu culture and spirituality has come up in France with the inauguration of the BAPS Swaminarayan Hindu Mandir Bussy-Saint-Georges, in the eastern suburbs of Paris, on September 6. The inauguration marked an important moment for the Hindu community in France and also highlighted the growing cultural ties between India and France.

 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually joined the inauguration ceremony and described the temple as a new milestone in the cultural relationship between the two countries.

 

The newly inaugurated mandir is France’s first purpose-built Hindu temple designed in the traditional Indian style. The temple has been built using stones brought from India and combines traditional Indian craftsmanship with modern French engineering.

 

The architecture includes beautifully carved shikhars, domes, columns, canopies and windows, giving the mandir a distinct Indian appearance in the Paris region. According to the temple authorities, the project represents a combination of Indian artistic skills and French technology.

 

 

However, the mandir is not only a place of worship. It has been designed as a centre for learning, cultural activities, community programmes and interfaith harmony. People from different backgrounds can visit the mandir to learn about Hindu traditions, ceremonies and philosophy.

 

One of the most important parts of the inauguration was the Murti Pratishtha, the Hindu ceremony through which sacred murtis are consecrated and installed in a temple.

 

The mandir houses Shri Akshar-Purushottam Maharaj, along with murtis of Shri Radha-Krishna Bhagwan, Shri Siyavar-Ramchandra Bhagwan, Shri Umapati Shankar Bhagwan, Shri Hanumanji and Shri Ganeshji.

 

The Murti Pratishtha was followed by a dedication assembly, marking the beginning of the mandir as a living place of worship and community activity.

 

 

 

The inauguration is being celebrated through the Paris Mandir Mahotsav, a 13-day Festival of Culture being held from September 2 to September 14.

 

The celebrations include a Vedic Mahayagna, Jal Yatra, Nagar Yatra, cultural programmes and religious ceremonies. A special Hindu Cultural Celebration is also scheduled for September 14.

 

The festival brings together devotees, members of the Indian diaspora and people from different communities in France.

 

 

The new mandir comes as India-France relations continue to grow beyond defence, trade and diplomacy. PM Modi highlighted the temple as a symbol of India's spiritual heritage and said it would further strengthen cultural ties between India and France.

 

For France's Hindu community, the mandir provides a dedicated traditional space to celebrate festivals, perform rituals and pass Hindu traditions to younger generations. For visitors, it offers an opportunity to experience India's architecture, culture and spiritual traditions in the Paris region.
