At least two people died after a fire broke out on Monday morning at a five-storey packaging unit in Gujarat's Surat district where around 125 people were rescued. The incident took place at Vareli located in Kadodara industrial area. According to the reports, the workers were working on the fifth floor of the Viva Packaging Company when the massive blaze erupted at around 4.30 am.
The rescue operation has concluded at the packaging factory. Further, a report by one of the news agencies suggested that some people reportedly jumped off the building to escape death. "Two people have died following the incident," said Rupal Solanki, the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Bardoli Division.
Kadodara police inspector Hemant Patel said that the blaze erupted on the first floor of the unit and soon spread to other floors. As per sub-divisional magistrate KG Vaghela, the fire department has rescued 125 people. Hydraulic cranes were used to rescue more than 100 workers, who were trapped inside the building.
According to the police, more than 10 fire engines were used to extinguish the flames. Over 10 fire brigades are still on the spot attempting to extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, said officials.
