Gujarat, September 25: In 2 separate operations, police have arrested 4 people in Surat, Gujarat, and seized mephedrone and opium worth more than Rs. 20 lakh from them, that were brought into the city for sale, from Maharashtra and Rajasthan, said an official.
The city crime branch officials acted on a tip-off, and stopped a car at a check post on Surat-Kadodara road, arrested 3 people. These people were found with 196.2 grams of Mephedrone / MD drug. This is worth Rs 19,62,200 in the local market.
During questioning, the accused 3 people - Imran Rashid, Imran Khan, and Muaz Saiyed said that the contraband they procured the contraband from a dealer at Nalasopara, near Mumbai, and smuggled it into Surat through a four-wheeler.
The accused are history-sheeters, who were arrested in the past for crimes like attempt to murder, criminal intimidation. The police added that further investigation was underway to find out who were to receive the drugs.
In a separate operation carried out by Surat Special Operations Group / SOG, a man from Pali, Rajasthan was arrested. 383 grams of opium worth Rs. 1,14,876 was seized from him.
All of the accused have been booked under sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The city police have launched a special drive “No drugs in Surat city”.
