New Delhi, May 25: A wave of panic and furor erupted in Twitter's global headquarters in the US after Delhi Police’s Special Cell made a "Special Suprise Visit" in Twitter India offices in Lado Sarai, Delhi, and Gurugram. Delhi Police conducted the search operation in connection to the "Congress toolkit" case.
According to the state police, the search was part of their routine process and they took the action after finding the company's replies "ambiguous". They clarified that they just wanted to serve notice over Congress toolkit conspiracy. "The Delhi police team went to the Twitter office to serve a notice to Twitter, as a part of a routine process. This was necessitated as we wanted to ascertain who is the right person to serve a notice, as replies by Twitter India MD have been very ambiguous," the statement read.
According to the source, the police hardly get any information as most employees are working from home due to lockdown.
Cops conducted the operation hours after sending the notice to Twitter over Toolkit tweets. In its notice Police has sought an explanation from a social media giant for labeling BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra's tweet on alleged Congress tweet as "manipulated media".
Delhi Police has said that as per their investigation, Twitter is acquainted with some facts related to the matter and is in possession of some information regarding the same. Delhi police have also asked Twitter to submit the evidence on the basis of which it added a ‘manipulated media’ label to the tweets.
Delhi police sent notice to Twitter after the central government took strong objection over the twitters action and slammed Twitter for not interfering in the investigation process. Govt also lashed out at Twitter and called the action taken by them is prejudged, prejudiced, and a deliberate attempt to color the investigation by the local law enforcement agency.
Last week, Twitter labeled a tweet by Patra on the alleged ‘toolkit’ as “manipulated media”. Twitter says it “may label Tweets that include media (videos, audio, and images) that have been deceptively altered or fabricated”. BJP leaders, including Patra, have posted numerous tweets to attack Congress over the purported ‘toolkit’. Social media took the action after congress wrote to Twitter and asked them to suspend the accounts of BJP leaders.
